PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the installation work by reducing the number of connecting wires between an outdoor unit and an indoor unit of an air conditioner, and to control the defrosting inexpensively with high reliability. SOLUTION: This air conditioner comprises a connector 303c of a temperature sensor 303 for an indoor heat exchanger temperature, a connector 302c of a temperature sensor 302 for a room temperature, and a connector 403c of a temperature sensor 403 for an outdoor heat exchanger temperature. The frosting is determined by reading temperature signals from the connectors 303c, 302c, 403c. The temperature sensors execute the same control processing regardless of two line-connection and three-line connection for determining the frosting. The temperature difference between the indoor heat exchanger temperature and the room temperature is updated as a new maximum temperature difference after 20 minutes from the release of a cold air preventing function, after the start of the heating operation. A ratio of the temperature difference and a set ratio are compared to determine the frosting of the outdoor heat exchanger. A defrosting operation time is determined on the basis of the ratio of the temperature difference. Further the unproductive defrosting is prevented.
