PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting the light emitting focal position of a light emitting element to accurately and efficiently perform the assembly of a light emitting element and a ferrule in an optical semiconductor package by detecting the optical axis and the focal position of the light emitting element in advance. SOLUTION: An electrical signal is inputted in the light emitting element 1 held by a clamp part 10 on a supporting base 11, and an infrared camera 35 is arranged just above the light emitting element 1 which emits light, and the image of a light emitting spot caught at the focal positionαof the camera 35 is received by an image processor 31, and the position on the rectangular coordinates of the light emitting spot to the reference point of a base 12 on which the supporting base 11 is placed is stored in an arithmetic device 31.
