PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To immediately reduce the speed of a vehicle securely for a necessary period of time especially when a preceding vehicle suddenly reduces the speed. SOLUTION: The actual distance between vehicles is detected by a vehicle distance sensor 14. A first target increased/reduced speed is calculated by a main ECU 18 by using the vehicle distance deviation, the deviation between the actual vehicle distance and the target vehicle distance, and the relative speed of the vehicle and the preceding vehicle, and a second target increased/ reduced speed is calculated by using the relative acceleration of the vehicle and the preceding vehicle. When it is determined that the preceding vehicle suddenly decelerates and the second target increased/reduced speed is smaller than the first target increased/reduced speed, driving of the vehicle is controlled based on the second target increased/reduced speed.
