PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic opening and closing device for a back door in which a degree of freedom in layout is enhanced. SOLUTION: In the automatic opening and closing door for the back door in which a driving portion 4 having a pinion gear 6 and a support shaft 7 is secured to one side of the rear opening of a vehicle body provided with an upward openable back door, a longitudinally movable and pivotable rack bar 8 is engaged with the support shaft, a rack gear 10 engaging with the pinion gear is formed in the rack bar, a rail 12 in which a guide groove 14 is formed in upwardly extending condition and along a longitudinal direction is secured to a vehicle body, the upper end portion of the rack bar located higher than the support shaft is movably engaged along the guide groove, and the lower end portion of the rod 16 whose upper end portion is connected by the back door is pivotably connected to the upper end portion of the rack bar, the rail 12 is bend in a direction in which the travel of the lower end portion of the rack bar 8 run away from an obstacle G.
