<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make effective function of minute misregistration correction by determining whether or not the quantities of misregistration in recording at a plurality of image forming parts are beyond an allowable range. <P>SOLUTION: The device having a structure in which the image forming parts corresponding to color components for forming a color image are arranged in order is provided with sensors located downstream from the corresponding image forming parts. The device performs a recording operation for a misregistration detecting pattern which is composed of a first pattern for detecting rough misregistration and a second pattern for detecting minute registration. As a result, in the case that the rough misregistration pattern is detected and it is beyond the permissible range (S2), a signal indicating an error is input and detection of minute misregistration and correction processing are not carried out.
