PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a method for producing an optically active 1,2-diol compound in a high yield by optically resolving a (dl)-1,2-diol compound by a simple method without caring about purity of a raw material. SOLUTION: The (dl)-1,2-diol compound is reacted with a carboxylic halide compound in the presence of an optically active oxazoline-copper complex catalyst represented by formula (I) (R<SP>1</SP>s are each independently a 1<SP>-</SP>5C alkyl group, phenyl group or benzyl group) and a base to optically resolve the (dl)-1,2- diol compound.
