PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily compensate elongation of a heated muffle in a vertical, heat-treating muffle furnace wherein a metal strip is passed through downward and heated it the inside of a heated muffle in a heating zone and then cooled in a cooling zone. SOLUTION: The vertical muffle heat-treating furnace is equipped with the muffle 11 positioned vertically so that the metal strip 2 can be passed through it downward, the heating zone 12 which heats the metal strip passing through the muffle from outside of the muffle and the cooling zone 20 which is located downstream of the muffle in the moving direction of the metal strip and cools the metal strip. Here, the upper end of the muffle is fixed, and a muffle elongation-adjusting zone 30, which is retractable and provides an airtight connection between the lower end of the muffle and the cooling zone, is established.
