PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map information system for displaying traffic congestion information which is easy to be visually recognized, even if map information is complicated. SOLUTION: A map display system is provided with a picture display portion 27 for displaying a map, a map information processing portion 23 for obtaining map information comprising information on roads in a region displayed in this display portion 27 from a map information storage portion 25, a traffic congestion information processing portion 22 for processing snarl information obtained from a traffic congestion information acquisition portion for acquiring the traffic congestion information concerning the roads, and a picture drawing processing portion 24 which processes a road line represented by information on roads on the basis of the acquired traffic congestion information and forms a traffic congestion information line. The formed traffic congestion information line is displayed in a picture display portion 27, being lapped over a variety of information for drawing a map read by a map/road drawing information storage portion 26. Besides, the status of the traffic congestion information is stored in the storage portion 26, and the drawing portion 24 draws a snarl information line on the basis of the status.
