The invention provides genetic material comprising an SFR2 (Sensitivity to FRreezing 2) nucleotide sequence encoding a protein which is capable of altering tolerance to an abiotic stress (e.g. frost, salinity, dehydration) in a plant into which said genetic material has been introduced. The SFR2 nucleotide sequences from a number of plants are provided, as are variants of these, and methods and materials based upon their use.
