PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for sterilizing cleaning waste water by which maintenance is easy and pathogenic microorganisms in the cleaning waste water can be surely sterilized at a low cost. SOLUTION: In the method for sterilizing the cleaning waste water, pulse discharge with discharge energy determined by turbidity within a range of 0.01 to 10 kWh/m<SP>3</SP>is applied to the cleaning waste water containing cyst occurred from filtration cleaning. At least a part of the treated cleaning waste water can be recycled to raw water and preferably a pulse discharge electrode having 0.1 to 15 mm diameter is used. In the sterilizing apparatus of the cleaning waste water, the cleaning waste water containing the cyst occurred from filtration cleaning is introduced in a storage system reaction tank or in a flow system reaction section where at least a pair of pulse discharge electrodes, which are disposed inside to face each other and are used for applying pulse discharge, are installed and the pathogenic microorganisms in the cleaning waste water are made inactive by the pulse discharge.
