A conveyor system comprises a horizontal roller conveyor (10) and a belt conveyor (13) for selectively inverting empty pallets (12). The belt conveyor has an inclined run (20) of its belt (14) extending downwardly from a horizontal run (16) at the level of the roller conveyor (10) to terminate vertically underneath the discharge end of the roller conveyor (10). The belt (16) can be driven selectively in a forwards or reverse direction. By driving it in the reverse direction with first receiving a pallet (12) falling from the roller conveyor, the pallet is inverted, whilst while driving it in the forwards direction when first receiving such a pallet (12), the pallet remains non-inverted. Discharge can similarly be selected to be from either end of the conveyor (13) by means of the direction in which the belt is driven.
