PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily manufacture an hourglass worm by means of a general purpose machine tool. SOLUTION: The generating unit 10 is composed of a slide table 11, an index table 14 mounted on the slide table 11, and a drive motor 15a for rotatably driving a rotary tool T arranged on the index table 14 in combination with each other. The generating unit 10 is mounted on a turn table of the machine tool. The axis C<SB>1</SB>of the rotary tool T is tilted by means of the index table 14. The rotary tool T is moved toward a workpiece W by means of the slide table 11. Thus, the hourglass worm can be generated by forming a thread groove on the workpiece W mounted on the machine tool.
