An internal combustion engine includes a piston 5 movable within a cylinder 4 that affords a combustion chamber, a spark plug 10, for effecting combustion of a fuel/air mixture introduced into the chamber by a fuel injector 7, and a water injector 8 for introducing water into the combustion chamber prior to and/or subsequent to the initiation of combustion of the fuel/air mixture. The cylinder may be insulated, and a coating of catalyst may be applied inside the cylinder. The water may be pre-heated by the engine exhaust prior to injection. |
