PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a work transfer method in a lathe with two turrets placed front and rear or vertically about a main shaft axis line, enabling transfer operation such as delivery including griping and ungripping of the work, unloading, etc., without using any special device. SOLUTION: In the method, gripping blocks 11, 11 are installed in one spot on a tool-mounted area of two oppositely-placed turrets 2L, 2R, the blocks 11, 11 of both turrets 2L, 2R are endexed when the work is transferred, a torque limit is applied to an X-feed motor 7, 7 to advance both turrets and tightly hold the work 9, and the both turrets 2L, 2R are synchronously moved in a X-axis direction, or an X-axis direction as required. When both turrets 2L, 2R are moved in the X-axis direction, an axial torque on the X-feed motor of the turret advancing in the X-axis direction is limited to a value less than that of the X-feed motor moving backward, and a feed command faster than that of the backward X-feed motor is given to the advancing X-feed motor.
