PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an isotope separation method which enables a separation process to be simple and efficient, cost to be reduced at the same time and a target isotope to be separated/concentrated efficiently with high selectivity in an industrial scale, and a work substance used for this method. SOLUTION: The work substance for separating an isotope includes a first group containing an isotope element to be separated and a second group being a group bonded to the first group to form the work substance for separating the isotope and dissociated by the irradiation with electromagnetic waves to form a non-polymeric solid product at the normal temperature. This prepared work substance is irradiated with electromagnetic waves to be decomposed into a vapor phase product (a) containing a target isotope element component comprising a decomposed gas component and an undecomposed work substance and a non-polymeric solid phase product (b) containing a component other than the target isotope element.
