<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of inadequate cleaning of HC which is easily discharged since HC desorption from an HC trap agent starts before a ternary catalyst reaches an activated temperature after cold start of an engine in an engine exhaust cleaning system using an HC trap catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: In an catalyst converter subjecting coating of the HC trap agent to a catalyst carrier, one or more slits are formed so as to cross a cell of the catalyst carrier. The heat transfer inside the catalyst carrier is blocked before and behind the slit, and the heat conduction to the downstream is controlled. As a result, a temperature rise in the catalyst carrier is slow, the amount of HC trapped is increased, the amount of the temperature rise in a catalyst metal is increased, and the treatment efficiency at HC desorption is improved. The exhaust gas entered into the cell causes a disturbance at the slit part and increases a chance to be in contact with the HC trap agent, as a result, the HC trap performance is improved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
