(A) Method for 18-methylene steroids (I) Where S is steroid residue of any series (including nor- and homo-types), opt. subst. e.g. by OH, C=O, hydrocarbon residues, hal. (Some of these cpds. are new) and esp. for CH2 R = H, OH or a (1-18C) Oacyl gp. R' = =O or where R2=H, a (1-18C) acyl gp., or a (1-8C) ether residue X = H or Me (B) The cpds. where R3 = alkyl or aryl and R4 and R5 = hydrocarbon (pref. lower alkyl) residues and corresp. cpds. in which C=O and OH gps. are protected, and esp. the corresp. analogues of II and III. (a) I are gestagens, ovulation inhibitors and contraceptives. Dose (rabbit s.c. or p.o) 0.01-1 mg/kg. (b) Intermediates for other active cpds. esp. aldosterone, 18-hydroxy-corticoids, etc.
