Apparatus for notching webs comprises a roller 12 and a cylinder 14 between which a continuously moving web is fed, the cylinder having mounted on the end faces thereof cutters 20 rotatable about axes perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder, the three blades of each cutter being operable by a stationary cam 30. The cylinder has die plates 40, 42, 44, 46 secured thereto to provide two die ports 49. The cylinder is driven by a shaft 16, the speed of which is synchronized with the speed of movement of the web. Chips notched from the web are removed by applying suction to a hollow space 50 in the shaft 16. Each cutter is stabilized during the dwell part of its cycle by means of a detent system comprising a head 27, Fig. 5, on the shaft 23 of the cutter engaged by a spring 29. |
