A heating assembly for a kiln comprises slicon carbide radiant tubes 12, 13 supported loosely in refractory packings 8, 9, 10, 11, gas or oil burners 18, 19, and two heat exchangers each of which is heated by combustion products sucked from the corresponding radiant tube and delivers heated combustion air to the other radiant tube. The heat exchangers include internal fins 29, 30, and the burners may be of the atomizing type. A burner 102 for heating a radiant tube 101 comprises a nozzle 111, a needle 112 which is spring biased against the nozzle outlet 115 and which has an axial bore 126, a duct 121 for oil under pressure and a compressed air duct 122. The needle and spring may be dimensioned to produce spurts of oil into the tube 101. In another arrangement oil is supplied through either of the ducts 121, 122, the other being closed. The tube 101 is provided with combustion air holes 129. |
