A platform lifting apparatus for lifting a wheelchair, the apparatus including a substantially horizontally disposed platform of a sufficient area and being adapted to allow a said wheelchair thereupon, a rotatable drive winch means being attached to the platform and being adapted to rotate, in use, by rotation of the two main wheels of a said wheelchair thereupon, the drive winch means being associated with a with a pulley arrangement mounted to either side of a frame and to the platform, the frame being configured and arranged, in use, to support the movement of the platform of between 20 and 30 degrees to the horizontal, and wherein the pulley arrangement includes a first fixed pulley attached adjacent the top position, and a second pulley arrangement associated with each side of the platform, and wherein the pair of first fixed pulley arrangement and the second pulley arrangements configured and aligned with the drive winch means by a suitable linkage system to enable, in use, the wheels of said wheelchair to act as a prime mover to rotate the drive winch means and operate the pulley arrangement to lift the platform between the bottom position and the top position.
