The mole trap has a handle (1) by which it is held to plant the peg (2) into the ground so that the washer (8) rests on the molehill. When the animal pushes the earth from its gallery it pushes the washer vertically which then tips the lever (4) and releases the spike support (5) which by means of a spring (9) forces the spike (6) into the mole's hole and kills it.
