1384170 Xylose and xylitol LAEVOSAN GmbH & CO KG 26 May 1972 [7 June 1971 2 Feb 1972] 24942/72 Headings C2C and C2S Xylose and xylitol are prepared by bringing into contact a gel with a pore diameter of between 0À7 and 3À0 mm., e.g. an ion exchanger, with xylose-containing plant hydrolysate of waste liquor from an acid sulphite cook for the production of hardwood pulp, the resulting solution containing impurities being subsequently run off from the gel and the xylose washed out of the gel either with water or with aqueous xylose solution, after which the xylose solution is concentrated and either xylose is crystallized therefrom or this concentrate is hydrogenated and xylitol crystallized therefrom.
