Terpolymers consisting essentially of tyrosine, alanine and lysine, or consisting essentially of glutamic acid in a mole fraction of 0.005 to 0.3, tyrosine in a mole fraction of 0.005 to 0.250 and lysine in a mole fraction of 0.3 to 0.7 or consisting essentially of glutamic acid in a mole fraction of 0.005 to 0.3, alanine in a mole fraction of 0.005 to 0.6 and lysine in a mole fraction of 0.2 to 0.7 are randomly polymerized into a polypeptide. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising the terpolymers can be used for treating autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, autoimmune oophoritis, autoimmune thyroiditis, autoimmune uveoretinitis, chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura, colitis, contact sensitivity disease, diabetes mellitus, Graves disease, Guillain-Barre's syndrome, Hashimoto's disease, idiopathic myxedema, myasthenia gravis, psoriasis, pemphigus vulgaris, rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic lupus erythematosus. Also described is a process of making a therapeutic heteropolymer composition.
