PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roll for hot rolling of a metallic material which has reduced cracks and whose service life can be elongated compared with the conventional one even when used for hot rolling. SOLUTION: In the roll, the outer shell is formed of iron containing, by mass, 1.6 to 2.9% C,≤1% Si,≤1% Mn, 4 to 18% Cr, 1 to 9% Mo, 3 to 8% V and≤5% Nb. A metal which does not enter into solid solution in the iron is further incorporated into the iron, and the fine particles of a metal which does not enter into solid solution in iron is dispersed into a layer used in the roll after solidification.
