<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically produce a vapor-grown carbon fiber with high productivity and further produce the carbon fiber by using an economical catalyst with a small amount of the added catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the vapor-grown carbon fiber comprises carrying out a pyrolytic reaction of an organic compound and an inorganic transition metal compound used as main raw materials.
