An isolated nucleic acid molecule that hybridizes under stringent conditions to the nucleic acid of SEQ ID NO:1, provided that the nucleic acid does not consist of a nucleic acid sequence selected from SEQ ID NO: 10 and SEQ ID NO:11, is described. The nucleic acid encodes for a 1- deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate reductoisomerase protein, preferably from an essential oil plant i.e. Mentha. Also described are vectors comprising the nucleic acid, cell transformed with vectors and methods for enhancing or reducing the level of expression of the protein in a cell.
