A method of preparing citalopram of formula (I) comprises: a) subjecting a compound of formula IV to reductive hydrolysis and b) converting the resulting 5-formyl compound of formula V to the corresponding 5-cyano compound - citalopram which is isolated as the base or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. In formula IV R is R3-N(R2)-C(=O)- or an optionally substituted 4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazol-2-yl and R1 and R2 are independently alkyl, aryl or heteroaryl or together form a 4 or 5-membered chain optionally comprising a S, O or N atom.
