1,207,402. Producing a magnetic field in an ellipsoid; transformers. COMPAGNIE ELECTRO MECANIQUE. 12 Dec., 1967 [16 Dec., 1966], No. 56388/67. Heading H1P and HIT. A device for producing a magnetic field comprises an inducing winding and a screening winding therearound, the two windings being formed by superconductors in a cryostat, characterized in that the two windings form concentric ellipsoids and are connected in series. The ellipsoids may be either oblate or prolate but preferably spherical. A cryostat has inner and outer surfaces 2 and 1, the inner surface enclosing but for passages 3 and 4, a spherical inner zone 5 wherein a magnetic field parallel to axis 6 is produced by coils 7 and 8. The coils are formed from conductors of constant cross-section and wound in the form of co-axial circular convolutions Space 9 of the cryostat contains liquid helium. The device may be used to store magnetic energy for subsequent pulse-wise use, the energy being transferred by a secondary winding by transformer effect or directly. The secondary winding may be placed within the surface 2 or outside surface 1. If required the surfaces 2, 3 and 4 may be omitted.
