A container for cylindrical rolls of sheet material, typically toilet rolls either coreless or cored, comprises a body having a front wall, a rear wall, side walls, first and second end walls, an inlet for inserting rolls into the body defined at or adjacent the first end wall of the body, and an opening of length at least equal to the width of the sheet material to be dispensed from the rolls near the second end wall. The edge of the opening closest to the second end wall, is spaced from the effective base of the container. By positioning a slot in the manner described, it has been found that there is a surprising improvement in the ease of dispensing of sheets from a roll and the tendency of the sheets to tear is greatly reduced. Two ribs are defined on the base of the container and a toilet roll in the container rests on those ribs. Since only a small area of the toilet roll rests on the base of the container and this greatly reduces the friction associated with turning the roll about its center to dispense sheets form the roll.
