PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dangerous substance detector with low electric power consumption. SOLUTION: This dangerous substance detector has sample introducing parts 9, 2 and 3, an ion source part for generating ions of a sample introduced by the sample introducing parts, a mass spectrometry part 4 for analyzing mass of the ions, a heater for heating the sample introducing parts and the ion source part, a plurality of pumps for exhausting a chamber for arranging the mass spectrometry part, and a control part for controlling these respective parts and the plurality of pumps. The control part performs control for reducing heating electric power supplied to the heater, and exhausting the chamber by successively driving the plurality of pumps so as not to exceed a prescribed electric power consumption value after heating the sample introducing parts and the ion source part by the heater. Thus, an urgent inspection can be made by starting the detector in a short time. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
