PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hot dip galvanized steel sheet which exhibits a low sliding resistance when it is press formed and stably shows excellent press formability. SOLUTION: A method for producing the hot dip galvanized steel sheet includes a process for hot dip galvanizing a steel sheet by dipping it in a hot dip galvanizing bath and passing it through the bath, a process for controlling the plated coating weight after pulling the steel sheet from the hot dip galvanizing bath and cooling the pulled steel sheet to a temperature not higher than the solidifying point of the plated metal, a roughness control process for controlling the surface roughness of the hot dip galvanized steel sheet by projecting solid particles onto the surface of the hot dip galvanized steel sheet being cooled to a temperature not higher than the solidifying point of the plated metal, and an oxidation treatment process for forming an oxide on the surface of the steel sheet subjected to the surface roughness control. In the surface roughness control process, fine dimple-shaped unevennesses are imparted to the plated surface. The average diameter of the solid particles used for the projection is 10 to 300μm.
