<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove sulphate reserved in a particulate filter by adding HC without early clogging of the particulate filter. <P>SOLUTION: HC is added to exhaust gas 8 upstream of a catalyst regeneration type particulate filter 10, and a catalyst bed temperature at a rear portion of the filter 10 is raised by reaction heat on an oxidation catalyst of the filter 10 of the HC, so as to gasify and eliminate the sulphate reserved here. The exhaust temperature is raised upstream of the filter 10 immediately after completion of adding the HC, so that the catalyst bed temperature at a front portion of the filter 10 is synergistically raised by heat received from the exhaust gas 8 and reaction heat transferred from the rear portion. Untreated HC at the front portion of the filter 10 is oxidized, and the particulate adhered thereto made to flow backwards in a dry condition and oxidized. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
