摘要

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a gradation inverting phenomenon without depending on observing direction in a liquid crystal display device having liquid crystal regions where liquid crystal molecules are axis-symmetrically aligned in every pixel region, excellent visual field angle characteristics and high contrast.

SOLUTION: A phase difference compensation element having negative double refractivity and the relation nx>ny>nzabout main refractive indices nxand nyin an intra-surface direction and the main refractive index nzin the thickness direction is disposed between a liquid crystal cell wherein liquid crystal molecules are nearly vertically aligned when no voltage is applied and liquid crystal molecules are axis-symmetrically aligned in every liquid crystal region and a polarizing plate disposed in a orthogonally crossed nicols state.
