PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lead based alloy for a lead storage battery, which has both corrosion resistance and mechanical strength by controlling the contents of Ca and Ba to prescribed ranges, and to produce a lead storage battery which can stably withstand use over a long period even under severe conditions at high temperatures by obtaining a positive electrode substrate by subjecting the alloy to casting or rolling and expanding or the like. SOLUTION: The lead based alloy for a lead storage battery has a composition containing, by weight, 0.02 to <0.05% calcium, 0.4 to 2.5% tin, 0.005 to 0.04% aluminum and 0.002 to 0.014% barium, and the balance lead with inevitable components.
