PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of reading even the ends of an original without losing the operation convenience of the image reader itself. SOLUTION: The image reader includes: an image sensor wherein a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements are arranged in an array; a lens array for forming an image of a read object of an original surface on the image sensor; a light source for illuminating the original surface; and a carrying roller in contact with the original face and driven in a main scanning direction. The image sensor and the lens array are disposed in a housing in the main scanning direction and a vertical direction, respectively, and are placed opposite to each other. The light source and the running roller are placed in the housing in a manner of interposing the lens array in the main scanning direction. The distance from the center point of the image formation of the lens array to one side face of the housing at the light source side is selected to be 10 mm or below, and the distance up to the other side face of the housing including the distance from the center point of the image formation of the lens array to the ground part of the original surface of the running roller is selected to be 10 mm or below.
