PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for image pickup by which an image free from mixing of noise accompanying a variation in substrate bias voltage can be obtained though the luminance of a subject is low. SOLUTION: The image pickup device is provided with: a luminance calculation means for obtaining subject luminance from the image pickup signal of an imaging device; and an electric charge accumulation period control means for controlling the electric charge accumulation period of the imaging device at multiple temporal intervals of a vertical transferring period by prohibiting the electric charge discharging of the imaging device by an electric charge discharging pulse when the obtained subject luminance is lower than a prescribed value.
