PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hardness tester forming a precise dimple on a sample without increasing machine accuracy and involving cumbersome adjustment or the like. SOLUTION: The hardness tester 100 comprises: an indenter shaft unit 10 further comprising mainly an indenter shaft 2 having an indenter 1 on the tip portion thereof, a moving tube 3 housing the indenter shaft 2 and movably supporting it in the axial direction, and a supporting tube 4 housing part of the moving tube 3 and movably supporting it in the direction of the indenter shaft 2; a control lever 20 having a pressing portion 22 on the tip portion thereof and rotatably fixed; an intermediate member 40 provided between the indenter shaft unit 10 and the pressing portion 22. When the pressing portion 22 presses the intermediate member 40 associated with the turn of the control level 20, a leaf spring portion 42 provided in the intermediate member 40 bends. Arc movement associated with the turn of the control lever 20 is thereby absorbed, and the intermediate member 40 presses the moving tube 3 only through the force in the direction of the indenter shaft.
