A load strapping means for use with a pallet comprises a cap 11 for placing on a load 17 on a pallet 16, at least two strapping strands 15 retractable through openings 26 into housings 14 at opposite sides of the cap, spring means within the housings for retracting the strapping strands, hooks 18 on the free ends of the strapping strands for engagement with the underside 21 of the platform 22 of a pallet, tensioning means for tightening the strapping means between the cap and pallet and stop means 34 for limiting the retraction of the hooks into the housings when not engaged with a pallet. The strapping strand may be a flat strap in which case the strap is attached to a crossbar (28, fig. 9) and successively lapped over increasing diameter parallel crossbars (29 - 32, fig. 9) within the housing. Retraction is effected by the action of a spring (33, fig. 8) on a slideable crosshead (27, fig. 9) on which three of the crossbars (28 - 30, fig. 9) are mounted to urge the crosshead away from the fixed crossbars (31 and 32, fig. 9). The strap is tensioned and locked by the action of a handle (37, fig. 9) rotating a slotted crossbar (39, figs. 9 and 10). Alternatively the strapping strand may be a rope or wire in which case it can be spirally retracted onto a reel whose flanges (62, fig. 13) are spaced negligibly further apart than the diameter of the rope. Retraction is effected by the action of a rewind spring (57, fig. 13), locking by the action of a pawl on a ratchet (fig. 15) and tensioning by a separate wrench which engages with a square socket (63, fig. 15) on the end of the rotation shaft. Two rewind reels may be provided in each housing wherein the straps would emerge on adjacent sides of the cap, and two units used to provide strapping on the other two adjacent sides.
