<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective liquid crystal display device wherein luminance of display especially in transmission mode is enhanced and which has excellent visibility. <P>SOLUTION: In the transflective liquid crystal display device 50, a liquid crystal 26 is interposed between an upper substrate 24 and a lower substrate 23 disposed opposite to each other, a semitransmission reflection layer 35 consisting of cholesteric liquid crystal layers 34r, 34g and 34b is provided on the lower substrate 23 and a backlight 22 is provided. Elliptically polarized light incidence means having quarter-wave plates 47 and 44, half-wave plates 42 and 48 and polarizing plates 43 and 45 on the outer surfaces of the upper substrate 24 and the lower substrate 23 respectively from substrate sides are provided and elliptically polarized light of the lower substrate and elliptically polarized light of the upper substrate have rotary directions reverse to each other and long axis directions nearly equal to each other. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
