PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition useful for STN type and excellent in response speed and steepness while keeping a high N1 point. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition comprises a compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein R<SB>1</SB>is a 1-10C straight-chain alkyl group; R<SB>2</SB>is a 1-6C alkoxy group, an aryl group or a 1-10C alkyl group which have an ether bond) and a compound represented by general formula (2) (wherein R<SB>3</SB>is a 1-10C substituted alkyl group; Z is a fluorine atom, a 1-5C alkoxy group or a 1-5C straight-chain alkyl group which may have the ether bond; Z<SB>1</SB>, Z<SB>2</SB>and Z<SB>3</SB>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom and a ring A and a ring B are each independently trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1-4-phenylene; 1 is 1 or 2; k is 0 or 1, with the proviso that when 1 is 2, two rings A are each independently trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene).
