A method for the production of synthesis gas from a hydrocarbon-containing subterranean formation comprising: providing heat to at least a portion of the subterranean formation such that at least a part of the heated portion reaches the pyrolysis temperature of kerogen, yielding pyrolysis products; collecting pyrolysis products from the subterranean formation; injecting a synthesis gas-generating component into the heated part of the formation, resulting in the production of synthesis gas by reaction of the synthesis gas-generating component with carbonaceous material remaining in the formation, characterized in that the synthesis gas generating fluid component is reacted with the heated part at a temperature in the range of 400 degree C to 1200 degree C for the production of synthesis gas containing H2 and CO in ratio related to the temperature. 2. Method according to claim 1 in which the synthesis gas generating fluid is water and/or carbon dioxide. 3. Method according to claim 1 or 2, in which additional heat is added to the formation prior to or during synthesis gas generation. 4. Method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the synthesis gas generating fluid comprises a mixture including steam and oxygen. 5. Method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, in which the pressure ranges from atmospheric pressure to the lithostatic pressure of the formation. 6. Method according to any one of claims 1 to 5, in which the synthesis gas generating fluid includes water, produced by pyrolysis. 7. Method according to any one of claims 1 to 6, in which the synthesis gases recovered are converted to heavier condensable hydrocarbons a Fischer-Tropsch hydrocarbon synthesis. 8. Method according to any one of claims 1 to 7, in which the hydrocarbon-containing formation contains kerogen. 9. Method according to claim 8, in which the hydrocarbon-containing formation contains kerogen with a vitrinite reflectance of 0.2% to 3.0%. 10. Method according to any preceding claim, wherein the formation is heated by one or more heat sources that are arranged in one or more heat injection wells. 11. Method according to any preceding claim, wherein the composition of the produced synthesis gas is monitored and the heating and/or input of synthesis gas generating fluid is controlled to maintain the composition of the produced synthesis gas within a desired range. 12. Method according to any preceding claim, wherein during the production of synthesis gas the formation is heated to a temperature between 600 and 1000 degree C. 13. Method according to any preceding claim, wherein during the production of synthesis gas a pressure in the formation is maintained between 2 and 80 bars, preferably between 5 and 60 bar.</p>
