1287006 Variable speed gears BORG WARNER CORP 1 Dec 1969 [6 Jan 1969] 58646/69 Heading F2D An overdrive planetary gearset 20 has a friction brake 50, a positive clutch 58, 59 and a one-way clutch 21, the clutch 58, 59 (e.g. spring applied) being controlled by an actuator 66 fed with fluid pressure (e.g. from a pump 152 driven at 35 from the output) via a valve 150 controlled manually at 84. The control may include a plunger 98 actuated by a solenoid 97 in an electric circuit with a speedometer 110, an engine manifold vacuum sensor 116, a kickdown button 115 and a lamp 118. The circuit and solenoid may be replaced by a manually operable button, Fig. 4 (not shown). The two two-position buttons of Fig. 4 may be replaced by a single three-position button connected direct to the spool 162 of the valve 150. The spool 162 of valve 150 has three positions: brake engaged for over-drive, fluid pressure being allowed only when the clutch 58, 59 is disengaged; both clutch 58, 59 and brake 50 disengaged; and clutch 58, 59 engaged for lockup.
