The lift has a lift cage supported on cables (1), with at least one of the cables being a steel cable (2) in a non-metal sheath (3) consisting of a flexible, elastically deformable material which may be rubber of plastic. The unsheathed cables have a round cross sectional shape. The steel cable is formed from high-strength wires with a tensile strength of more than 2000 N/mm2. The sheathed cable, inclusive of the cover, has the same or smaller thickness than an unsheathed cable of the same type.
