The invention relates to a method for controlling the water jet sharpening sequence of a pulp grinder (1), in which method a high-pressure water sharpening jet (18) is directed to the surface of a pulpstone (3) with a wat er sharpening apparatus. The quality (13) of fibre pulp (7) is determined with at least one variable (10, 11, 12, 21, 22, 74, 75). Target values (15) are defined for the selected variables. The determined quality values and their target values are transmitted to a control unit (16) of the water sharpening apparatus that has an adjustment strategy set in it for controlling water sharpening. According to the adjustment strategy, the treatment pressure and/or treatment interval of the sharpening water jet (18) is controlled relative to an error value of the quality target value and quality value of the fibre pulp (7). Further, the invention relates to an apparatus implementing the method of the invention.
