The invention relates to a device and a method for converting WDM signals into an OTDM signal. The inventive device comprises offset means (102, 103, 104) which can introduce a time delay between the pulses supported by the optical WDM signal carriers, modulation means (112, 113, 114) which can modify the optical power of the WDM signals, an optical time multiplexer/demultiplexer (120), a birefringent propagation medium (130) in which the WDM signals are injected for the purpose of soliton trapping and absorption means (140) which can introduce optical losses at the components of the OTDM signal. Said device can be used to perform very high flow WDM/OTDM conversions. The invention can also be used to perform reverse OTDM/WDM conversions. The device is intended to be installed in long-distance telecommunication networks.
