A method of identifying a spliced joint in an optical fibre by including on or adjacent the joint, a time-dependent dye or coating, the visual characteristics of which vary over time. The invention also discloses a spliced joint in an optical fibre which has on or adjacent the joint a time-dependent dye or coating, the visual characteristics of which vary over time.
