A catalyst (I) containing at least one group VIII metal and based on a fluoride modified support material having a specific surface area of greater than 100 m2/g is new. An Independent claim is included for a process for the hydrogenation of aromatic compounds by contacting the substrate, optionally in a solvent, with hydrogen in the presence of the catalyst (I).
