PURPOSE: A card number compression method and system is provided to compress a black list, coomposed of credit or traffic card numbers of lost or uncreditable cards, and to store the compressed black list at a payment terminal so that it can reduce a transmission speed and a storage memory size of the payment terminal. CONSTITUTION: The method includes receiving black lists from plural card companies, compressing the black lists, and transmitting the compressed file to payment terminals. The structure of the compressed file comprises a data setting area(1) and a data storage area(2). The data setting area(1) includes BIN(Banking Identification Number) fields(11, 11', ...), data storage area size fields(12, 12', ...), and offset value storage fields(13, 13', ...). The data storage area size fields(12, 12', ...) store the size data of each BIN. The offset value storage fields(13, 13', ...) store the offset values between the start addresses of each BIN data field(22, 22', ...) and the start address of the data storage area(2).
