METHOD OF INCREASING THE HYDROSTATIC STRESS STRENGTH OF A POLYMER
摘要

The invention relates to a method of increasing the hydrostatic stress strength of a polymer while decreasing its melt flow index, and to an artefact manufactured from a polymer modified in accordance with such a method. The polymer is of the type having a crystalline phase as well as an amorphous phase at temperatures below its crystalline melting point, such as a high density polyethylene. The method includes the step of modifying the molecular mass distribution by partially crosslinking the amorphous phase of the polymer by subjecting the polymer to a dose of ionising radiation at a temperature where both the crystalline and the amorphous phases are present in the polymer.
