The present invention is directed to novel nucleic acid molecules that enco de epidermal growth factor (EGF) protein. The EGF is optimized for expression i n a plant. Vectors, genetic constructs, and transgenic plants comprising plant- optimized nucleotide sequences encoding EGF are disclosed. The nucleic acid molecules and corresponding vectors, and transgenic plants are useful for achieving large- scale or high-yield production of EGF.
